The “Invisible” Essential: Why Arena Membranes are Non-Negotiable

When you’re dreaming of your new arena, you’re usually thinking about the beautiful white sand or the springy fibre surface. You probably aren’t dreaming about a giant roll of grey fabric. But let me tell you, the Arena Membrane is the single most important part of your arena that you’ll never see again.

Think of the membrane as the security guard of your arena. Its job is to keep the clean, expensive sand and fibre up top and the dirty, muddy soil and stone down below.

Woven vs. Non-Woven: Which Do You Need?

This is where it gets a bit technical, but I’ll keep it simple. There are generally two types of membranes: woven and non-woven.

Woven Membranes are incredibly strong and are often used under the stone drainage layer to provide stability to the ground.

Non-Woven Geotextiles are what you usually see sitting between the stone and the sand. These are designed to let water flow through freely while acting as a filter to stop sand particles from clogging up your drainage.

In my experience, skipping the right membrane is the fastest way to ruin an arena. I’ve seen beautiful schools turn into a “mud-mix” because the sand has slowly seeped through into the sub-base. Once that happens, there’s no fixing it—you have to dig the whole thing up and start again.

Drainage is King

We live in a climate where rain is a constant companion. A high-quality geotextile membrane ensures that even after a tropical downpour, the water can move through the surface and into the drainage pipes without taking your sand with it. It keeps the surface “clean” and extends the life of your arena by decades.

Whether you’re topping it with Standalone Fibre or Rubber Chippings, that hidden layer is what keeps your investment safe. Don’t skimp here—it’s the one part of the arena you definitely don’t want to see again!
