Surface Installation - A Clear, Practical Guide
Installing a riding surface can feel daunting, particularly if it’s your first build or you’re upgrading an existing arena. In reality, successful surfaces all follow the same core principles — good drainage, stable foundations and correct surface depth.
This guide explains the key stages of surface installation in plain terms, helping you understand what matters most and where attention to detail makes the biggest difference.
Step 1 – Inspecting Your Delivery
Before installation, check your Standalone Fibre for:
- Consistent fibre length and colour
- Even moisture content (normal for weatherproof fibres)
- 99.9% contamination-free and screened for consistency
- Odour note: due to the latex, calcium and nylon fibres, the material can sweat in the bale and arrive with a pungent smell. This is normal and not harmful. Once spread and aired, the odour dissipates within a few hours.
Tip: If the smell is strong on arrival, open the bales and spread the fibre promptly to allow airflow. A quick light rolling/levelling pass helps it settle while the odour clears.
If anything looks out of place, contact us immediately so we can inspect and advise.
Step 2 – Preparing the Base
Your base is the foundation of performance.
We recommend:
- A compacted stone base with excellent drainage
- A woven membrane beneath to separate the base and surface
- Properly cambered levels for water runoff (1:100 gradient recommended)
If using our Arena Kits, your drainage and membrane are already designed to work seamlessly with this surface.
Step 3 – Laying the Fibre
- Unload evenly across the arena — avoid piling in one area.
- Spread using a front loader or arena leveller.
- Roll lightly to settle the fibres and achieve uniform depth (usually 4–6 inches).
- Ride lightly for the first few sessions to allow natural bedding.
Pro Tip: For mixed surfaces, consider combining with Silica Sand or Rubber Chip to fine-tune grip and rebound.
Step 4 – Maintenance & Aftercare
Standalone Fibre is designed for low maintenance.
To keep your surface in peak condition:
- Roll or level periodically
- Avoid excessive watering — it’s not required
- Keep organic matter (leaves, droppings) off the surface
- Top up only when necessary
Regular light maintenance ensures optimum footing and extends your surface lifespan beyond 20 years.
Step 5 – Riding In Your New Surface
New surfaces benefit from a short settling-in period.
During the first few sessions, light use allows materials to bed naturally and reach their optimal feel. Most surfaces become firmer, more consistent and more responsive within the first couple of weeks, without the need for heavy intervention.
Allow a few short rides for the surface to fully bed in — it will feel firmer and more responsive after the first week of use.
Our surfaces are designed to be frost-resistant, wind-stable and consistent in all seasons.
