The Science of Stability
Why does the grade of sand matter? It’s all about the shape of the grains. Standard sand grains are often round, which means they roll over each other—imagine trying to run on a floor covered in marbles. Silica sand grains are “sub-angular.” This means they have edges that allow them to lock together when compacted.
This locking action is what gives your horse a stable platform. Without it, the horse has to work twice as hard to stabilize themselves, leading to fatigue and potential injury. When you ride on high-quality silica, you feel a “crust” on the surface that supports the horse’s weight while still allowing for natural hoof movement.
Health and Longevity
The fact that this sand is “washed” is also critical. Washing removes the “fines”—the tiny dust particles that create that horrible haze in the summer. It’s much better for your horse’s respiratory system (and your own!). It also helps with drainage.
