Bouncing Back: Why I’m a Fan of Rubber Chippings

We all worry about our horses’ legs. Whether you have a retired-racer-turned-happy-hacker or a senior pony who still loves a cross-country pop, shock absorption is the name of the game. I’ve ridden on a lot of different rubber surfaces over the years, and I’ve seen some “budget” versions that left me worried—mostly because of the bits of wire or mesh you’d sometimes find sticking out.

The Equestrian Rubber Chippings from Equestrian Surface Solutions are a different story. They are 100% recycled and, crucially, 100% wire-free.

The Comfort Factor

The biggest thing you’ll notice when you add rubber to an arena is the “bounce.” Rubber provides a level of cushioning that sand alone just can’t match. It’s particularly beneficial if you do a lot of jumping or if your horse has any history of joint issues. It takes the “sting” out of the landing.

I also find that horses seem to enjoy the “feel” of it. It’s a very forgiving surface. If a horse makes a mistake or loses their footing slightly, the rubber shifts just enough to absorb the impact without causing a slip. It’s like riding on a giant gym mat—supportive but soft.

All-Weather Reliability

Another massive plus for rubber is its performance in the wet. Because rubber doesn’t absorb water, the chippings stay on top of the sand, providing a layer of insulation. This helps prevent the underlying sand from freezing and keeps the arena usable even after a heavy downpour. It also helps to keep the moisture in the sand during the summer, preventing it from becoming a dust bowl.

If you’re considering a rubber surface, I highly recommend starting with a solid base of Premium Silica Sand (you can read my thoughts on that here). Together, they create a surface that is consistent, safe, and—most importantly—kind to your horse’s joints. It’s a bit of an investment up front, but the reduced vet bills and the extra years of riding you’ll get from your horse make it more than worth it. You could also consider Standalone Fibre if you want a complete alternative.
