Modern equestrian surfaces are designed to be durable and relatively low maintenance. However, like any working surface, a small amount of regular care makes a significant difference to how an arena rides, drains and lasts.

Good arena maintenance isn’t about constant work or specialist equipment. It’s about understanding how the surface behaves and taking light, sensible action before small issues turn into bigger problems.

Knowing When a Surface Top-Up Makes Sense

All arena surfaces experience gradual material movement over time — this is normal. Signs that a top-up may be beneficial include:

Reduced cushioning

Inconsistent feel underfoot

Thinning in high-use areas

Where the base and drainage remain sound, many arenas perform exceptionally well with nothing more than improved footing and a targeted fibre top-up, often extending surface life by many months or even years.

Using Standalone Fibre is one of the most cost-effective ways to restore performance without the disruption of a rebuild.

Most maintenance-related problems arise from good intentions rather than neglect.

Common mistakes include:

Over-harrowing or excessive mechanical work
Mixing incompatible surface materials
Ignoring early drainage warning signs
Chasing short-term feel rather than long-term stability

When in doubt, lighter intervention is almost always the better option.

While regular care and top-ups resolve most issues, there are times when maintenance alone won’t be sufficient.

You may need to consider a more structured solution if:

Drainage has failed beneath the membrane
The base has lost integrity
Multiple surface issues are present

In these cases, a staged upgrade using Arena Kits or a full surface reinstallation may be the most practical long-term option — and this can often be planned without urgency once the issue is understood.
